14-3-3 proteins in apoptosis BJMBR
Rosenquist,M..
The once obscure members of the 14-3-3 protein family play significant roles in the determination of cell fate. By inhibiting the pro-apoptotic BAD (Bcl-2-antagonist of cell death) and the transcription factor FKHRL-1, 14-3-3 displays important anti-apoptotic characteristics. To date, five points of interaction of 14-3-3 with the apoptotic machinery have been identified. How these interactions are regulated still remains a mystery.

Apoptosis in parasites and parasite-induced apoptosis in the host immune system: a new approach to parasitic diseases BJMBR
Barcinski,M.A.; DosReis,G.A..
Apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death (PCD), has been described as essential for normal organogenesis and tissue development, as well as for the proper function of cell-renewal systems in adult organisms. Apoptosis is also pivotal in the pathogenesis of several different diseases. In this paper we discuss, from two different points of view, the role of apoptosis in parasitic diseases. The description of apoptotic death in three different species of heteroxenic trypanosomatids is reviewed, and considerations on the phylogenesis of apoptosis and on the eventual role of PCD on their mechanism of pathogenesis are made. From a different perspective, an increasing body of evidence is making clear that regulation of host cell apoptosis is an important factor...

Autophagy protects against neural cell death induced by piperidine alkaloids present in Prosopis juliflora (Mesquite) Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVA,VICTOR D.A.; CUEVAS,CARLOS; MUÑOZ,PATRICIA; VILLA,MONICA; AHUMADA-CASTRO,ULISES; HUENCHUGUALA,SANDRO; SANTOS,CLEONICE C. DOS; ARAUJO,FILLIPE M. DE; FERREIRA,RAFAEL S; SILVA,VANESSA B. DA; SILVA,JULIANA H.C. E; SOARES,ÉRICA N.; VELOZO,EUDES S.; SEGURA-AGUILAR,JUAN; COSTA,SILVIA L..
ABSTRACT Prosopis juliflora is a shrub that has been used to feed animals and humans. However, a synergistic action of piperidine alkaloids has been suggested to be responsible for neurotoxic damage observed in animals. We investigated the involvement of programmed cell death (PCD) and autophagy on the mechanism of cell death induced by a total extract (TAE) of alkaloids and fraction (F32) from P. juliflora leaves composed majoritary of juliprosopine in a model of neuron/glial cell co-culture. We saw that TAE (30 µg/mL) and F32 (7.5 µg/mL) induced reduction in ATP levels and changes in mitochondrial membrane potential at 12 h exposure. Moreover, TAE and F32 induced caspase-9 activation, nuclear condensation and neuronal death at 16 h exposure. After 4 h,...

Genes associated with hypersensitive response (HR) in the citrus EST database (CitEST) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Guidetti-Gonzalez,Simone; Freitas-Astúa,Juliana; Amaral,Alexandre Morais do; Martins,Natália F.; Mehta,Angela; Silva,Marilia Santos; Carrer,Helaine.
Plants are continuously exposed to pathogen attack, but successful infection is rare because they protect themselves against pathogens using a wide range of response mechanisms. One of them is the hypersensitive response (HR), which is a form of cell death often associated with plant resistance to pathogen infection to prevent the spreadsebpg@cnpq.br sebpg@cnpq.br of the potential pathogen from infected to uninfected tissues. Cell death is activated by recognition of pathogen-derived molecules by the resistance (R) gene products, and is associated with the massive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), salicylic acid (SA), and other pro-death signals such as nitric oxide (NO). The analysis of the citrus EST (CitEST) database revealed the presence...

In vivo self-incompatibility response in the wild potato Solanum chacoense bitter JBAG
Capurro,M.A; Medina Piles,V; Camadro,E.L.
In tuber-bearing Solanum species (potatoes), S-locus mediated self-incompatibility is under gametophytic control. In this system, self-fertilization is avoided when the same S-allele is expressed in both pistil and pollen. Because the ultrastructural details of the self-incompatibility response in this group of species is unknown, the aim of this study was to identify the cellular events involved in this response by using the diploid species S. chacoense Bitter as a model. To this end, pollinations were carried out in two genotypic combinations previously identified as (1) compatible and (2) self-incompatible (self-pollination) for the S-locus. Pollinated pistils were fixed on an hourly basis and observed under a transmission electron microscope to detect...

Nuclear exclusion of transcription factors associated with apoptosis in developing nervous tissue BJMBR
Linden,R.; Chiarini,L.B..
Programmed cell death in the form of apoptosis involves a network of metabolic events and may be triggered by a variety of stimuli in distinct cells. The nervous system contains several neuron and glial cell types, and developmental events are strongly dependent on selective cell interactions. Retinal explants have been used as a model to investigate apoptosis in nervous tissue. This preparation maintains the structural complexity and cell interactions similar to the retina in situ, and contains cells in all stages of development. We review the finding of nuclear exclusion of several transcription factors during apoptosis in retinal cells. The data reviewed in this paper suggest a link between apoptosis and a failure in the nucleo-cytoplasmic partition of...

The role of necroptosis in neurosurgical diseases BJMBR
Liu,T.; Bao,Y.H.; Wang,Y.; Jiang,J.Y..
Programmed necrosis or necroptosis is an alternative form of cell death that is executed through a caspase-independent pathway. Necroptosis has been implicated in many pathological conditions. Genetic or pharmacological inhibition of necroptotic signaling has been shown to confer neuroprotection after traumatic and ischemic brain injury. Therefore, the necroptotic pathway represents a potential target for neurological diseases that are managed by neurosurgeons. In this review, we summarize recent advances in the understanding of necroptotic signaling pathways and explore the role of necroptotic cell death in craniocerebral trauma, brain tumors, and cerebrovascular diseases.

กระบวนการเกิด Programmed cell death ในเซลล์ใบอ้อยที่เป็นโรคใบขาว Thai Agricultural
Kanjana Kirasak; Taksina Sansayawichai; Weerapon Polrakdee.
White leaf disease of sugarcane, which is more damage to economic crops in Thailand. It is infectedby phytoplasma pathogenic and transmitted plant by leafhoppers vector. There are several symptoms that indicate the white colour, white-green and yellow leaf etc. The symptoms are affecting to sugarcane growth and yield vary according to the intensity of the symptoms. The most severe were effect on the death and no yield. There is no way the get rid phytoplasma and no disease-resistant varieties. This research leads to understand the mechanism of the effect of phytoplasma to damage sucarcane in the expression of the white leaf disease symptoms. Application for renewal of the sugarcane is the serious disease that can survive until the yield. Processes of...
